- Turning off V.42 means you still have MNP4. That's quite adequate for
- error correction. You do lose out on data compression however. Some
- modems allow you to disable the V.42 detection phase and you still get
- LAPM error correction (LAPM is the actual error correction, V.42 is the
- detection) and that sometimes works also.
